You may not expect to hear a mental health professional suggest you spend more time on your smartphone but I’ve found that some apps can help with managing mental health problems very effectively. Often best used in combination with other kinds of therapy, they’re free or low cost and you can use them on-the-go.

The range of apps which claim to benefit our mental health can in itself be overwhelming. I’ve checked them out and here’s my pick of the best six apps for improved mental health.

1. Calm

This multi-award-winning app, Calm helps you learn more about the benefits of meditation. It aims to help you get a better sleep so that you wake feeling more restful.

2. Headspace

Headspace gets you learning how to meditate with a 10-day beginner’s course that guides you through the essentials of mindfulness.

3. Insight Timer

This app offers featured events, insightful talks, and courses. The aim is to help you get better sleep, stay calm, and reduce anxiety levels.

4. AURA

Another award-winning app, Aura offers a holistic approach. It provides a personalized library of never-ending resources designed for keeping you well. Its partners are some of the world’s best coaches, therapists, and storytellers.

5. BREETHE

This app boasts impressive credentials such as 30,000 five-star reviews and over 10 million users. Developed by qualified professionals, it aims to give you more ways to tune out, wind down, and drop off to sleep.

6. BUDDHIFY

Buddhify weaves meditation and mindfulness into busy, modern lifestyles. It focuses on
mobile or on-the-go meditation, which you can do wherever you are and whatever you’re doing. I like their approach of integrating traditional mindfulness with the realities of day-to-day life.
